Pancreatic cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the tissues of the pancreas — an organ located behind the stomach that plays a crucial role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. Though less common than some other cancers, pancreatic cancer is often considered one of the most serious because it is usually diagnosed at a late stage.
The pancreas performs two main functions:
Digestive function – It produces enzymes that help break down food in the small intestine.
Hormonal function – It produces hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which help regulate blood sugar levels.
Exocrine tumors: The most common type, usually adenocarcinoma, starts in the ducts of the pancreas.
Endocrine tumors (Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors): Rare and develop in the hormone-producing cells.
