A major issue in Nigeria is what can be described as the late-diagnosis trap. Many patients only seek medical care once symptoms become severe. Research shows that over 70% of cancer patients in the country are diagnosed at Stage III or Stage IV, when treatment is far more complex, expensive, and less effective. This pattern has created a dangerous environment where routine medical examinations are avoided, and the disease often goes undetected until it reaches an advanced stage.
I was diagnosed with advanced Stage 3C cancer. Seeking clarity, I pursued second and third opinions, eventually uncovering the full extent of my condition. The disease had silently spread to my lymph nodes, marking the beginning of a long, challenging battle.
From that moment, my life entered the harsh, often isolating world of oncology. Shock and disbelief were my first companions, as I hoped, even briefly, that it was all a terrible mistake. But cancer is not something that can be wished away—it is a harsh reality that demands courage, treatment, and resilience.
